Shelf Life:

Storage:

 

  • Before opening: Store at controlled room temperature (15°C–30°C / 59°F–86°F).

  • After first puncture: Store at 2°C–8°C (36°F–46°F) and use within 90 days.


Indications:

 

Dogs:

  • Treatment and prevention of vomiting (including chemotherapy- or motion sickness-induced).

  • Prevention of vomiting (except foreign body obstruction cases).

  • Used with supportive therapy for managing vomiting.

Cats:

  • Prevention of vomiting and reduction of nausea.

  • Treatment of vomiting in combination with supportive measures.


Mechanism of Action:

 

Maropitant is a neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonist that blocks substance P in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract, effectively preventing vomiting.


Dosage & Administration:

 

  • Species: Dogs (≥8 weeks) and Cats (≥16 weeks)

  • Route: Subcutaneous injection

  • Dosage: 1 mg/kg (0.1 ml/kg) once daily

  • Duration: Up to 5 consecutive days

Additional Notes:

  • Administer at least 1 hour before situations likely to induce vomiting (e.g., travel, chemotherapy).

  • May be given the day before chemotherapy for prevention.

  • Can be combined with other treatments as needed.


Side Effects:

 

Common:

  • Pain or swelling at the injection site

  • Vomiting or hypersalivation at higher doses

Less Common/Rare:

  • Lethargy, decreased appetite

  • Diarrhea

  • Allergic reactions

  • Incoordination, convulsions

  • In cats: panting, muscle tremors, abnormal posture (e.g., inability to rise)

Note:
Effects usually resolve within 24 hours but may last longer in pets with liver or kidney disease.


Drug Interactions:

 

  • Use cautiously with:

    • Chloramphenicol, Phenobarbital, Erythromycin, Ketoconazole, Itraconazole, NSAIDs

  • Maropitant is highly protein-bound; caution when combined with other protein-bound drugs (e.g., anticonvulsants, behavioral medications).


Precautions:

 

  • Not evaluated in breeding animals or in cases of GI obstruction or toxin ingestion.

  • Use cautiously in pets with hepatic impairment (metabolized by CYP enzymes).

  • Monitor closely when used with CYP inhibitors or other highly protein-bound drugs.
