Pharmacodynamics
Clindamycin is a lincosamide antimicrobial agent with activity against a wide variety of aerobic and anaerobic bacterial pathogens.
Clindamycin is a bacteriostatic compound that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal sub-unit. The site of binding appears to be in the 50S sub-unit of the ribosome. Binding occurs to the soluble RNA fraction of certain ribosomes, thereby inhibiting the binding of amino acids to those ribosomes. Clindamycin differs from cell wall inhibitors in that it causes irreversible modification of the protein-synthesizing subcellular elements at the ribosomal level.
Pharmacokinetics
Clindamycin hydrochlonde is rapidly absorbed from the canine and feline gastrointestinal tract.
Serurn levels of clindamycin can be maintained by oral administration of 5.5 mg/kg bodyweight every 12 hours or 11 mg/kg bodyweight every 24 hours. Average peak serum concentrations of clindamycin occur 75 minutes after oral administration. The elimination half-life for clindamycin in dog serum was approximately 5 hours. No accumulation of bioactivity has been observed in dogs after several oral administrations.
INDICATIONS:
BIOCLAN liquid for use in dogs and cats is indicated for the treatment of infections listed below:
Dogs and cats: Skin infections such as deep wounds and abscesses, dental infections and Osteomyelitis
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
Dogs
Infected Wounds, Abscesses and Dental Infections: 1.25 - 7.5 mg/kg
(1 - 6 ml/5 kg) body weight every 12 hours
Osteomyelitis: 2.5 - 7.5 mg/kg (2 - 6 ml/5 kg) body weight every 12 hours, Cats
Infected Wounds, Abscesses, and Dental Infections: 2.5-7.5 mg/kg (1-3 ml/2.5 kg) body weight once every 24 hours depending on the severity of the condition CONTRAINDICATIONS:
BIOCLAN liquid is contraindicated in animals with a history of hypersensitivity to preparations containing clindarnycin or lincomycin.
Because of potential adverse gastrointestinal effects, do not administer to rabbits, hamsters, guinea pig, horses, chinchillas or ruminating animals
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS:
Keep out of reach of children. Not for human use.
Safety in gestating female or breeding male dogs and cats has not been established.
ADVERSE REACTIONS: Side effects are occasionally observed such as vomiting and diarrhea.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Clindamycin hydrochloride has been shown to have neuromuscular blocking properties that may enhance the action of etier neuromuscular blocking agents. Therefore, BIOCLAN liquid should be used with caution in animals receiving such agents.
